This proposed project aims to explore the complex mechanisms through which a firm's internationalization impacts upon its performance. It employs a large sample of Chinese enterprises with a view to transform the Chinese contextual idiosyncrasies into a unique opportunity of theoretical innovation through a dialogue between theory and practice. A major contribution lies in crafting and empirically testing a new theoretical framework entitled "Time compression dis-economies of internationalization" to examine the internationalization-performance nexus. The key premise of the new framework is as follows: owing to limited absorptive capacity firms are often unable to digest and effectively absorb their internationalization experience when it is overloaded within a short period of time, leading to negative effects of internationalization. Guided by this theoretical framework, the project examines some key dimensions of internationalization process including pace, rhythm, product scope and geographic reach, focusing particularly on how these parameters moderate the internationalization-performance relationship. By doing this, the project will demonstrate how the new framework perfectly fits the idiosyncrasies of Chinese firms which have been experimenting an unconventional path of internationalization - they are short of classic type of ownership advantage but nevertheless internationalize with an accelerated speed. The findings of the project will push forward the frontier of academic theorizing in internationalization behaviour, helping to shape new theories concerning emerging market enterprises' internationalization. On the practical side, the findings will not only provide convincing explanations for the failure of internationalization by many Chinese firms from new theoretical lenses but also carry important practical values for Chinese government to optimize policy options towards outward foreign direct investment.
