This project is based on the established comprehension of the historical developments and current situations of tectonics, and particularly on the profound understanding of its theoretical and practical dilemma in facing the deteriorating resource crisis and environmental problems. This project takes tectonics as its subject of study, environmental mediation as its perspective of research, and composite-construction and integrated design as primary concern..Employing the methods of both qualitative description and quantitative analysis and focusing on the contemporary lightweight architecture, this project sets out to conduct in-depth study of the theoretical tradition and contemporary dilemma of classical tectonics which is characterized by its constructional and aesthetic themes and beliefs of the 19th century; on the other hand, this project strives to discover the vigor of contemporary architecture, in response to environmental mediation, and to unveil the theory potentials and strategy possibilities latent in this deviation from and challenge to the classical theories of tectonics. As a result, this study will derive a different theoretical discourse in response to the pressing needs and propose tectonic strategies with an orientation towards environmental mediation, inspiring Chinese contemporary practice to acquire true vitality from this ontological element of architecture..Focusing on the fundamental scientific problems, this project will enrich and accomplish the architectural design theory that focuses on ontological issues. The introduction of environmental mediation into the tectonic research will break the routine and rigidified understanding of tectonics, better accommodating the requirements of sustainability and affordable technology, making a break-through at both academic and practical levels.
