The traditional NC has disadvantages of closed architecture, unfriendly interface and expansively shady operation cost. In order to overcome the above shortcomings, based on PC hardware platform and Linux and rtlinux OS, we put forward an architeture for soft CNC to tackle the critical realtime of NC kernel. The basic frame and main software modules of soft CNC have been built. A high speed fieldbus,4 channels and each channel daisy-chained 32 devices with 12Mbps transmission rate and tranmission distance of 100 meters,is developed to connect CNC controller and motor drivers or PLC I/O. This fieldbus will simplify the wiring, improve the reliability and reduce the cost of CNC system. The facility in programming, operation and maintainance of CNC system has been achieved by introduction of multimedia technology into CNC software and the operation cost can be further reduced. There are three NC platforms, such as PC+motion control card, PC+USB based interface card and soft CNC, developed and used in industry. The study also covers topics on STEP-NC, Corba soft bus, machine tool error compensation and software servo driver.
