Digital mobile communication systems in the future will develop toward the.direction of large capacity and multimedia transmissions. In these systems, the frequency resource will be further limited and in the same time the requirement to the reliability for the transmission will be higher and higher. Therefore the research on.how to find a kind of novel coded modulation scheme not only with power efficiency but also with frequency efficiency is of important significance.In this project we focus our research on the following important and basic problems in the designing of an optimal MLC/MSD coded modulation scheme applied in Rayleigh fading channels. They include: optimal non-Euclidean metric, reasonable.choice for code rate by the channel capacity rule, different mapping and set partitioning strategies for the signal constellations, comparision on performance between two different decoding methods--- MLC/MSD and MLC/PDL, comparison.on performance of hard decision decoding and soft decision decoding and so on. We also discuss the application of MLC in image transmission by using the unequal error protection (UEP) characteristics of MLC in AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels respectively
