The bioactive iron (Fe) is one of the most important micronutrient for the productivity of ocean phytoplankton. It plays an important role in the global biogeochemical cycles and the carbon cycle. Ice core is taken as an excellent archive of past environmental and atmospheric compositions. The effect of iron fertilization can be reconstructed based on the high resolution Fe data from polar ice cores. However, the data of bioavailability Fe is very scarce from the Antarctica. Therefore, this project will be launched to obtain the temporal and spatial high-resolution Fe data in past 150 years. By collecting the samples (including surface snow, snowpit and ice core) from coast to the summit of the ice sheet at several typical locations, in particular, the modern process characteristics of Fe between snow/ice and aerosol at East Antarctica would be focused in this project. And the effecting of anthropogenic activities will be paid close attention to since the industry revolution period. The experiment scheme will be carefully designed and used the multi-parameters with the different instruments. This project would significantly promote our understanding of the biogeochemical cycles of Fe in Antarctica, providing foundation for further study of iron fertilization and effect of its carbon pumping in the southern ocean.
具有生物活性的元素铁(Fe)被认为限制了海洋初级生产力,其生物地球化学效应对全球碳循环起到重要的调节作用。雪冰作为良好的古气候代用指标,通过雪冰中生物活性元素Fe历史重建,可以探讨过去不同时期生物活性元素Fe的“施肥效应”。但生物活性元素Fe数据在南极区数据匮乏,缺乏系统性研究。因此,本项目依托中国南极中山站-Dome A断面科学考察,以断面采集的雪冰样品和海洋—冰盖交汇处(中山站)收集的大气气溶胶样品为研究对象,以生物活性元素Fe现代过程与重建工业化以来人类活动的影响作用为两个科学目标;通过合理的实验设计,利用多参数化学指标,探讨断面不同地区生物活性元素Fe来源与时空分布,为深入研究南大洋Fe肥及其碳泵效应奠定基础。
