Backgroud: Risk associated with previously unrecognized or unsuspected chemical pollutants in the environment has long been a major concern of environmental scientists. It is quite critical to protect ecologic and human health by identifying and investigating the potential environmental pollution issues before they worsen. During the last decades, the impact of chemical pollution has focused exclusively on the conventional "priority" pollutants, which would only be one piece of the large puzzle in "holistic" risk assessment. Nowadays, the pharmaceuticals and active ingredients in personal care products (PPCPs) receives comparatively little but increasing attention due to their large amount of usage throughout the world as well as the comparable quantities introduced into the environment with "priority" pollutants. UV filters and polycyclic musks just belong to this class of chemicals. Some of UV filters and musks have shown potential endocrine disruption properties and additive effect could be found for multi-exposure. Studies on the exposure level of those compounds in environment as well as their impact on reproductive function were only performed in few countries, which become the driving force for us to start this proposal in China. .Objective: Three parts of work would be done to clarify the exposure level of UV filters and polycyclic musks in urban aquatic environment in Pearl River Delta Area and assess their impact on reproductive function within women and embryos or neonates in this region. .Proposal in brief: 1) Accurate, precise and convenient analytical methods would be established for different type of environmental and biological samples. 2)Exposure level of UV filters and Polycyclic musks in urban aquatic environment in Pearl Delta Area would be investigated by determining their concentration in different components of aquatic environment, such as water, sediment, sludge, biota, etc. The investigation results would be used for their environmental and health risk assessment. 3)The impact on reproductive function would be conducted by the following means. Firstly, the concentrations of these two types of compounds in specimens of normal women, women suffering from endocrine-related diseases and women having adverse pregnancy history would be measured. Secondly, statistic analysis would be performed to find the correlation between diseases and exposure to these two types of compounds using survey/questionnaire data (such as data on personal lifestyle, product use, and food consumption etc.), together with data of exposure level investigation. Thirdly, transmission of UV filters and musks from mothers to offsprings were investigated to assess their impact on offsprings health by analyzing their concentrations in related biological samples (breast milk, placental blood and umbilical blood, etc.) and correlation analysis.
