Transport kinetics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) permeating a novel composite silicone rubber membrane has been primarily investigated. The used membrane was developed by ourselves and of wonderful transport performance. The pervaporating experiment has been conducted for evaluating transport behaviour of the membranes with some organic compounds, and the overall mass transfer coefficients have been resulted in by the experimental measurements. By dealing with overall transport coefficients of membranes with different thickness, they have been split effectively into the convective transport coefficient on membrane and the diffusive coefficient in membrane. The liquid film transport on membrane and diffusion in membrane have been studied intensively, and some significant observations have been revealed. This is considered as a new method that can be used to evaluate or test mass transfer performance of similar membranes and their modules. Some transport properties of the involved organic compounds with the membrane have been obtained. The developed composite silicone rubber membrane has been integrated into a bioreactor for experiment of continuous fermentation for ethanol. The membrane has also tentatively applied to dealcoholize wine and beer for new kinds of alcoholic beverages.
