Eleven new succimido amino acids were synthesized by Mannich reaction. The aqueous solution of their rare earth complexes with 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) shows photochromism when UV-irradiated. Hydrolysis of these amino acid derivatives results in respective amino acids. And their rare earth complexes with phen have photochromic properties. Sixteen new lanthanide supramolecular compounds of amino acids and phen were synthesized, and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The photochromic systems were observed by UV-Vis, 1H and 13C NMR, and EISMS. The results indicate that there is only one independent step in the decoloration process and affirm that photochromic process is a first-order kinetic one. Probably, the photochromic phenomenon is a proton transfer process due to photoinduced thermal activation. However, hardly soluble rare earth carboxylate coordination polymers have no photochromic properties.
