It was dertermined that AVS (cold-acid volatile sulphide) was the dominant factor, which controlled toxic metals partitioning between sediment–rstitial water em(inactive-active). The reaction mechanism of AVS ominating hemical activities of toxic metals was scussed. The results of benthos toxicity tests validated that such equilibrium tioning relationship could quantificationally predtic the bioavailabiltiy or toxicity of heavy metals. Therefore, the ference and/or ratio of SEM (simultaneously extracted metals) and AVS was actually the effective criterion for assessing toxicity of metal-contaminated iment.In additional, this study tried to assess the sedient quality in continental shelf sea areas with backgroud value method. The sediment quality in coastal area, where pollutants including heavy metals nad organic pollutants -existed, was discussed with Hakanson ecological risk index method.
