A serial hypocrellin derivatives with various structures and various partition coefficients were prepared. The UV-visible absorption spectra、singlet oxygen-generating quantum yields and amphiphilicities of the hypocrellin derivatives were measured. The structure/photocytotoxity relationships of the hypocrellin derivatives were studied. The results showed that the partition coefficients of hypocrellins between lipid/water play an important role in the photocytotocities. The amino-substituted hypocrellins , demonstrating strong red absorption in the domain of phototherapeutic windows(600-900 nm)、proper hydrophobic and high photocytotoxicity, might prove to be potential phototherapeutic agents.
