Semiconductor laser (semiconductor optical amplifier) one of the most important opto-electronic devices in information communication. They are the devices of direct opto-electronic conversion, and may be used in many aspects because of their small volume, light weight and high conversion efficiency. . In order to improve the coupling efficiency between single mode fiber and semiconductor laser or semiconductor optical amplifier, their waveguide structures are designed basing on the matching between mode fields. Their fundamental mode fields are squeezed into fields matching that of single mode fiber , and the coupling is investigated effectively in theory..The structure model of semiconductor optical amplifier with tapered-rib structure is built, effect of the waveguide parameters is calculated by finite-element method on mode expansion of tapered-rip structure, so the coupling efficiency up to 95% is obtained by the optimal design of waveguide parameters. .The quantum well structure is studied for semiconductor laser and semiconductor optical amplifier with circular near field, the structure of circular field is analyzed theoretically in detail, and semiconductor optical amplifier of wavelength 1310nm is designed with approximately circular field of high coupling efficiency. Semiconductor lasers with circularly symmetrical waveguide , or two dimension nonlinearly tapered waveguide are designed and studied theoretically, and the mechanism of low loss coupling is analyzed. Tapered waveguide is investigated by Fourier mode expansion and approximate scale finite-element method, and the effect of different structure parameters is given on mode expansion. The semiconductor laser with mode expansion and high coupling efficiency is put forward, and design of structure parameters and mask is given. These results obtained show significance in the studying the mode field of semiconductor laser, and will give help in practical production.
