The purpleback flying squid Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis (S. oualaniensis) is one of the most important economic Cephalopods distributing in the Indian Ocean, the equator and Subtropical waters of Pacific. Comparative research of fisheries biology on S. oualaniensis would be studied among different geographic groups (the northwest Indian Ocean, high seas nearby the equator of eastern Pacific and the South China Sea). The statolith morphology of S. oualaniensis would be observed and measured to study the growth characteristic of the statolith morphology and to identify whether there would be significant differences among different geographic groups. The relationships between important featured parameters of statolith and the individual size (mentle length and body weight) will be studied and compared among different geographic groups to find the inherent relation. Age, growth and population structures of S. oualaniensis among different geographic groups would be studied based on the microstructure of statolith, and the growth characteristics will be compared to each group in order to find the internal regulations among the different geographic groups, the growth models will be created. Trace elements distributions on the statolith would be analyzed and compared among different geographic groups by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), and the relationship between the contents of trace elements and the marine environment factors would be built and compared to each different geographic groups. The populations structures will be identified by the trace elements distributions and the results would be compared to the hatching populations based on the microstructure of statolith. A new scientific system and research method of study on the different geographic groups of oceanic Cephalopod would be created by this study. The study of fisheries biology and the fisheries ecology of S. oualaniensis will be improved and the result will provide scientific basis for the reasonable development and scientific management of S. oualaniensis resources in the future.
