Using a combined observational and numerical approach I propose to address two questions with far-reaching consequences for fields ranging from star and cluster formation to galaxy formation and evolution: What are the initial (dynamical and environmental) conditions and star-formation efficiencies required for star cluster formation? and What fraction of star clusters can survive to old age
