An experimental apparatus for the measurements of the solubility and transport phenomena of mixed-solvent in polymer membranes by combining quartz spring weighing and material balance. To improve the accuracy, multi-sample cells are used to increase the total amount of mixed solvents being adsorbed. The vapor-liquid equilibrium data and adsorption kinetic curves of four mixed-solvent/polymer systems have been measured using this apparatus. The thermodynamic and transport properties such as vapor-liquid equilibrium data, infinite diluted activity coefficients, infinite diluted diffusion coefficients for some single-solvent/polymer systems have also been measured by using quartz spring weighing, inverse gas chromatography and quartz crystal microbalance methods. A mutual-diffusion-coefficient model based on local-composition concept, two transport models for mixed solvents in glassy polymer membrane based on adsorption/absorption dual-mode theory and based on creep of polymer/mixing theory and a molecular thermodynamic model for copolymer systems have been developed. The correlated results for the experimental data are satisfactorily.
