This new project aims to systematically study the Late Permian to Middle Triassic paleontology and paleoecology of 20 sections, which represent various depsotional environments ranging from intraplatform basin, ramp, shallow platform, siliciclastic shallow sea, to nearshore settings in South China. Emphasized are these fossil records showing predation and symbiotic interactions among marine invertebrates. Detailed morphologic classification, measurement and quantitative analysis will be conducted on the predatory drillholes, bite marks, and shell-crushing marks as well as episkeletobionts and endoskeletobionts. This study also attempts to reveal the predator-prey pressure and skeletobiont-host competition in ultilizing ecologic resources, forawrd the replacement models of predation and symbiotic interactions in various environmental settings during biotic extinction, survival and recovery stages, with emphasis on evolutionary traits of biotic predation pressure variations in marine ecosystems before and after the mass extinction as well as during the biotic recovery. This new project also hopes evoluate potential warning signals of biotic predation and symbiosis response to biotic mass extinction and possible driving dynamic faciliating ecosystem's restoration. Eventually, the global models of predation and symbiosis evolutions of invertebrates during this critical period of macroevolution of Earth life will be established, providing some examples for unravelling the organism-organism and organism-environment co-evolutions during major geological turning periods.
