The project coordinated 16 research institutes all over China and set up 20.typical pilot areas for basic category soil classification study. The study has suggested the principles and methodology for basic category soil classification in line with the essence of Chinese Soil Taxonomy; defined the concept of characteristic soil layer" and its application in setting up soil Series; proposed 750 soil Series which came from all over the country and all 14 soil Orders of Chinese Soil Taxonomy hence are the important basis for further study; established the.methodology of soil mapping of detailed map scale based on soil Series and its related legend system; applied the basic categories for multi-purpose interpretation assisted by the built database and various models. Higher categories of Chinese Soil.Taxonomy also got modified during the systematic study. This project is fundamental in the view of completing the system of Chinese Soil Taxonomy and, enhancing its application in soil resource evaluation and sustainable management. During the study,.six monographs, 130 journal papers among which six are of SCI-source papers, appeared as supported by the project.
