According to the experimental investigation on the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) from fine-grained soils by the use of the steam stripping process, a mathematical model describing the desorption of PAH from soil particles is proposed and the fundamental experimental data are obtained. The steam stripping process and the corresponding laboratorial plant with own intellectual property are developed. The adsorption/desorption velocity constants can be determined by several test runs on the laboratorial plant. A software used for the simulation of the desorption process of PAH from soil particles is prepared. By means of the computer simulation based on the experimental data obtained from the laboratorial plant, the optimal operation parameters for a pilotplant such as reaction temperature, suspension concentration and suspension flow rate can be determined. Using the present steam stripping process and laboratorial plant, the energy consumption for the removal of PAH from soils is only 1/3-1/5 of that of foreign plants. A patent for this laboratorial plant has been granted.
